Today's GRRRRR!!!!

I am totally shocked. Ms. Clinton did some questionable things with emails and folks are out for blood. It probably was not great judgment on her part. Bush and Rove deleted all emails on the way up to the Iraq war, Cheney was asked to share the list of who helped make his energy policy and he said "Go Fuck yourself!" War crimes are committed by the Bush administration and breaks the Geneva Convention so bad some members of the administration can't travel overseas. I am so sick of partisan politics I could scream. How about what is good for the country for once.

and then on NPR, I heard a fifteen year old moan "Bring back my daddy" after he was shot by the baton Rouge police multiple times while in custody.

This absolutely boggles my mind. I hear people talk about the government making banks give loans. Notice in this article "Bear don't care." and that WAMU blacklisted honest brokers and appraisers. So glad they stole my money and got away with it. Sociopaths, enabled sociopaths.

Oh boy, yet another county is voting to secede from the State they are part of. There are numerous counties in northern CO that want to secede from CO and become either their own state or part of another state. Siskiyou Co. in northern CA voted to do the same last night.

Why? oddly enough these are all republican counties that do not feel as if they are fully represented by the Democratic majority. Well, guess what? I lived in CO for years when it was a republican stronghold, in Jefferson County when it was run by a very conservative church in Arvada. When you don't get your way, you DO NOT OFFER TO TAKE YOUR BALL and go home. Democracy is advanced citizenship (thank you "American President"). You might even have to work on compromises for the good of the whole. self-sacrifice in ways that does not involve war or emergency situations. Being adult and wise.

A good lesson to learn. BTW, honestly, if I could have seceded from the United States of Cheney/Bush I probably would have and even thought of becoming an expat if Romney won. That said, maybe if you don't like the country you live in and do not want to solve problems, you could leave. I understand Somalia, the libertarian paradise, still has some real estate.

I see Duetschebank and Wells Fargo are shitting their respective knickers and have filed suit against the City of Richmond, CA and San Francisco. The cities are attempting to declare eminent domain of underwater properties. Then, they intend to refinance the properties back to owners with mortgages that reflect the current value of the home. The banks are in an uproar.

Why, it is (in their opinion) improper use of eminent domain, the confiscating of bank property through basically condemnation and reselling it. Regardless of the fact that the underwater homes causes foreclosed homes to flood the market, cause urban eyesores, drop property values and lose tax revenue, stressing school income. No problem for the banks if that is the case. No skin off their noses. TS to those who used to live there. Let them be homeless, the slackers. But take the banks' properties, big problem.

Wait. Aren't these the properties that the banks had to be bailed out from because they were overvalued? You know, the ones you and I paid for with our taxes? The ones the banks got to keep when other people paid for them?

Yes, the very same ones. So, the public pays for them, bails out the banks, few if any business leaders go to jail for criminal enterprise, few lose their jobs and the majority received bonuses for a job well done. After all the banks got free money and in business that is a good thing.

Capitalism does not work that way. For everyone who screams about the need to keep the free enterprise system free---it has not been free at upper levels since 2008. It it really were a free enterprise system, instead of corporate welfare, the banks would have failed. They made bad investments, they should lose. But, no. Taxpayers had to bail them out. If you or I do a shitty job at work, we lose our jobs. Not these asses. They get bonuses for doing such a shitty job the government had to cover their asses.

Now when a City wants to take action, they do not want government involvement. Really??? Wells used money they received to purchase Wachovia. I did not see Wells say, "no we are doing okay, don't need government money." Hell, no, they took it and bought out a competitor making them too much bigger to fail.

Amazing how much capitalists (in name only) squeal when they might lose their welfare-paid for assets (really, the bank bail out was nothing more than corporate handouts) for the greater good of the community. Social contract be damned. It is not what is for the good of the community. John Locke would indeed be rolling in his grave.

Keep in mind that until the 1800s (late 1800s, at that), companies had to have their charters that allowed them to do business granted every X years to stay open. If they broke their social contract they were disbanded. Think Standard Oil, or Bell Telephone (in the 1980s). There is precedence.
<h5 class="uiStreamMessage userContentWrapper" data-ft="{"type":1,"tn":"K"}" style="background-color: white; font-family: 'lucida grande', tahoma, verdana, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; font-weight: normal; line-height: 18px; margin: 0px 0px 5px; padding: 0px 20px 0px 15px; word-break: break-word; word-wrap: break-word;">
<span class="messageBody" data-ft="{"type":3}" style="color: #333333; line-height: 1.38;">This article gives some of the background of the deal. Blackstone buys Sea World and leverages $1.3B in debt. That means they really did not have the money to buy them, used their name to borrow $1.3 billion and then transferred the debt immediately to Sea World. Blackstone has no debt and Sea World has to cut, austerity for all. And then goes for public sale to cover that debt, promising dividends all the way. In the meantime the Blackstone group makes $500,000,000 for putting this together. net, that means the invested $1,000,000,000 and borrowed $1,300,000,000. They moved that debt immediately to the new company they bought and asked public investors to buy stock to fund that debt. and paid themselves $500,00,000 in management fees for coming up with the scheme. I wonder if investors will ever get their 3% dividends. So for putting up $1,000,000,000 Blackstone gets $1,800,000,000 profit, almost a 2--% margin from other people's money, promising to pay them back over time. Wow!

It must be nice to play with the money of others and not have a ton of risk. And if this fails, Blackstone still makes money as managers and consultants. It's good to be the king!

And oddly enough Blackstone backs the austerity plans of members of Congress (Simpson, Bowles, Ryan). Not saying debt is not a problem. It sure in the hell is, but when your basis for doing business is borrowing money and then selling things off to pay for it, making sure you take your percentage off the top of the sale, regardless of whether the sale makes sense or not--basically making money using someone else's money with little if any risk to your own pocketbook, you have to wonder whether that economic model ever has an end. The last guys to invest in Ponzi schemes always get burnt. Follow this through to the logical conclusion.

the government runs up debt by doing stupid things like not budgeting for our annual ecological disaster, appropriates unbudgeted emergency funds (at this point do not think about the $4,000,000,000,000 unbudgeted for Iraq and Afghanistan) has no real backing to pay for these debts and has to start selling off what was supposed to be a public trust. Little things like property and mineral rights in national parks. Eventually the debt gets to the point that the big traunche of money that is a surplus and is supposed to be kept sacred (Social security) gets to be sold in an attempt to cover irresponsible management, which does not affect the managers because they still keep their jobs and get bonuses and perks. Remember in the long term how effective Chain Saw Al was as a manager. He gutted companies, took his bonus, sold them as a shell of their former self (basically selling the name) and road off in to the sunset holding money and creating nothing. Oh yes, many of those companies investors found were worthless when he was done. There are two ways to cut debt--revenue and austerity.

The US is in bad enough shape both are needed. Management ran up debt, the Federal reserve printed money to cover it quantitative easing) and the money was used by groups like Blackstone to amass more money they now keep offshore. It's good to be the KINGS! Use other people's money to make vast amounts, leverage the whole damned government and then keep the money out of circulation waiting for the next crisis.

Eventually the whole country gets sold. When will people realize money is not a commodity but a symbol for something real--people's work, love and life. And then cannot be traded bartered and sold without real damage. Out of control capitalism really is unsustainable. Vampires run out of blood eventually if they turn them all.

Of course, debts could be paid and revenue (taxes) raised to do it, but first you would have to be grounded in your country.

Saturday morning news thoughts--

I saw in the paper today that Sheldon Adelson gave away free money to right wing newspapers so that they could be published and distributed for free. Guess what that has done to the liberal newspapers in the country? If you think that might put them out of business because of a competitive disadvantage, you might be correct. Nail on the head, Alfredo!

Just think of that in terms of what is happening in America right now. Faux News ran at a loss for many years under the largesse of the billionaire Rupert Murdoch. They stayed open and basically gave away their very conservative message-filled news as real news until they forced others to move to the right. This automatically legitimized their view point. Forty years ago, many of their editorial opinionsthat would have been to the right of the then-discredited John Birch Society, who were still looking for the Knights Templar and their children, the Illuminati, are now espoused as main stream America beliefs.

Then we had the Citizen's United decision at the Supreme Court. Any amount of untraceable money can be given as free speech to political candidates (yes, it is more complicated than that, but it basically means if you curry favor, aka kiss ass and spread a particular gospel, you get money). If you oppose the free money (excuse me, free speech) you go home broke.

Let's see--who has more money, extremely successful capitalists or me (or you). So who gets to provide unlimited money (BUY) candidates and their opinions. Yes, that is how free speech is defined by the Supreme Court, the guys who are supposed to be all about the legal interpretation of justice in America. This kind of skews what is the paradigm of success in America. If you are to voice an opinion (free speech) and be heard, you need to have money and buy mouthpieces, either a propaganda (news) network or a political candidate.

Sad. The marginal beliefs of a few loons can be mainstreamed over time if you have money.

Second thought--

Since the embargo by the US and EU on Chinese solar panels, their industry is starting to have issues. If you read up on this, it depends on who you believe. The Wall Street Journal states that loans from equity firms allows the Chinese solar panel industry to stay open and keep from folding under financial pressure. Another source states that there is a tremendous strain on the Chinese manufacturers and the state-funded loans they have received that may cause a large bubble to pop inn the Chinese economy. Maybe 50 Chinese manufacturers have already gone bankrupt. Dozens in the US. What this means is that prices are lower than ever to go solar. However, when you buy panels and get a warranty, are the panels you bought going to have a manufacturer to warranty them? Will they be older technology? Will they be 19% efficient newer technology? It does mean research will slow as there is less profit to be had. Sadly. The same is happening to wind turbines. Basically, the price has been fixed by China, they overproduced and there is a glut on the market and many good people lose their jobs. This is supply side economics and trickle down at its worst. Those with deep pockets win as "the market stabilizes". Then, they set the rules and prices. If you don't believe me, see what happened to the sons and daughters of the Standard Oil dismemberment. How many oil companies are there now? When was the last time you saw a Sunoco station? Sohio? Standard?

Currently there are congressional investigations into unfair labor and financing packages against the Chinese in regards to the renewable energy industry. China knew they needed energy NOW. They funded factories for their energy needs. But, once they did this, their goods could be sold worldwide at a price that is cheaper than local industries can produce. This is what unbridled capitalism does. Makes bubbles and then they fold. This also makes the case for growth that is controlled by government tariffs, protecting local industry, JOBS, and the local (or national) economy.

There are limits to free trade. Just think about how many jobs Apple would have saved in the US if they had not taken the manufacturing of iPhone 5s to China. That saves a whole 6 cents a units. Would you have purchased an iPhone5 for 50 cents more per unit? Would that have made a difference? Oh yes, Apple received a tax credit for dismantling a factory here in the US. Huh?

Maybe we need a government that is concerned about the good of its citizens instead of power and how much they can trade that power for.

"The far-left magazine Mother Jones (possibly one of Fidel Castro's favorite publications) has put out another old video of Mitt Romney, in which he says Bain Capital 'was formed to invest in start-up companies and ongoing companies ... then harvest them at a significant profit.' Even though Mother Jones is appalled, that's what capitalism is! You grow companies, you make them more profitable, then if you're lucky you sell them for lots of money. Sometimes the free market is brutal, but it does provide vast opportunity for those willing to work hard and take chances." Is all capitalism has to offer is profit to the highest manipulator? I hate to say, but without social controls, that is what capitalism on steroids is. Just like communism is at its worst a demotivating society where you get equally what is produced, whether you helped in that production or just slacked off. In fact, that is what makes this election cy
cle so interesting. and nerve wracking. Will it be capitalism on steroids where everyone wants and wishes to be at the top of the bubble? The system will never self-sustain without the system eating human lives, the bottom of the social economic structure provides the lives or fuel for this dystopian process. (Hey, sue me for bleak thoughts on a warm sunny, football Sunday.) A system where economic mobility is seriously limited to those who are members of the lucky sperm and egg club, except for a few innovators who have the guile for business as it is.

Or will it be a different environment where regulations for banks and criminal prosecutions for gambling with others money and environmental consciousness are part of the agenda. Where second-tier manufacturing has as much importance as banking? Where workers take pride in what they produce, not that they just produce profits?

from Confessions of a Pagan Nun:

"I do not understand a man who does not want to know all that he can know. Why would anyone choose ignorance? If he chooses ignorance because he is lazy, then he is a fool, for the ignorant are put to hard labor digging and hauling stones for masters who tell they need no knowledge. If a man must labor from dawn to dusk to avoid a blow on the head to earn a cup of grain, he has no time to gain knowledge and remains a slave to his masters. I think, therefore, that it is a worthy vocation to free a man enough that he can learn who he is and what he is capable of...Teaching is a sacred art...The teacher the bard, the singer of tales is a freer of a man's minds and bodies...But he is also a danger to the masters if he insists on telling the truth. The truth will inevitably cause tremors in those who cling to power without honoring justice. (pp. 104-5)

I learned regret in the ruins...I regretted that ambition had ruled my heart instead of affection for my kin. And with the lessons of regret came the gratitude for having life still to move my lips and limbs, and to speak kind words to embrace those I might not see again on this sweet-smelling earth. I learned I cannot wait to love what is in my presence, for it or I may be well gone tomorrow. (p. 145)" Kate Hornsley, author

I had never heard of this book or author before, but this spring by chance I found myself in one of the best independent bookstores I know, The Tattered Cover, in Denver. Killing time while my wife searched for something, I remembered reading somewhere that Charles de Lint had a column if Fantasy and Science Fiction magazine, so since they have a great magazine section, I found F&SF and his column. He mentioned this book and another by Kate Hornsley as very good reads. So, I was off on a mission looking for her books there. Sadly, no luck. I went to the Gender Studies studies and in the Used section there I found nothing by John Stoltenberg (anyone who looks at men's studies should read his On Becoming a Man), but found Kate Hornsley's fiction there, used at a great price. Must have been fate. they are good!

Find them yourselves and read them. yahoo!
